Growth of historical groupsThe area’s rich historical heritage has developed an expanding array of interested people all working to learn more about the past, preserve its meaning, and to share this knowledge with others.'And, five area associations have done a great deal of work in the Alton-Wood Kiver area.The Alton Area LandmarksAssociation, a non-profit organization,was officially formed on March 3, 1970. During the next two years, the organization launched an unsuccessfulMayor Paul Lenz.In 1972 a Visitors Center, an extension of the Landmarks Association, opened at Hart House on Belle Street. The center provides information about Alton’s history, conducts tours of monuments and homes of historical value, and organized a Lincoln-Douglas debate re-enactment as part of the Historical Alton Week in 1972.This year, the association has beenactive in preparing for the Tricentennial celebration and plans to conduct a fall historical tour. Alton Area landmarks isattempt to save the old GM 0 freight under the direction of Robert St. Peters.station from destruction, sold 1,500 boxes of stationary picturing historic Alton homes, installed wooden and brass plaques on houses of historic significance, and was instrumental in having May 5. 1971 declared Historic Alton Day byThe Alton Historical Commission, formed by a proposal of the landmarks Association, was established on Nov. 23, 1971. The six-member commission, appointed by Mayor Lenz, works to preserve historic sites b\ the establishment of cityordinances.On November 14, 1948, the Alton Area Historical Society was formed at thewhome of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Meyer. Theorganization is a branch of the Madison Countv Historical Society.w wThe society, a not-for-profit association, collects books, newspapers; post cards, pictures, brochures, and other miscellaneous paper items associated with the Alton area. The Historical Society, celebrating its 25th Anniversary Year, is headed by Mrs. Carmel W. Mann.The Alton Museum of History and Art,founded in 1971, hopes to preserve not only art objects but common articles of every day use in order to kindle respect and enthusiasm for the past.The museum, a non-profit organization,is current!v located at McKernon House,121 Last Broadway next to the Telegraph '1 he museum is slated to open this fall and is headed by Hebert PowlesThe lewis and (lark Society ofAmerica, officially organized in 1950 with Charles Gabbert as president, tries topreserve the sites of exploration by Lewis and Clark.The organization, now headed by Mrs. Peter Klunich, is working to make the Lewis and (’lark State Park a National Historic I-indmark The park is locatedsouth of Hartford and has expanded to 174 acres with land received from the U.S.Corps of Lngineer.s.The association is also working todevelop the old Camp Dubois site, whereLeu is and Clark expedition camped prior to the famous journey up the Missouri
