One Walla Walla father believes support schedule is 'unrealistic'By KATHLEEN OBENLANDOf tha Union-BulletinLarry Hoy of Walla Walla is taking a deep personal interest in the bills in the Legislature calling for a reduction of child support payments.Hoy currently is involved in court hearings to finalize support and custody of his children. What happens in Olympia will influence his future, his children’s future, and the lifestyle of any future family he may have.A year ago he owned a home and a restaurant that he operated with his wife. He also had a second job, and three young children. Within a 60-day period, his wife left him and took the children, and a disabling illness intensified to the point he could no longer work or run the restaurant.Hoy has moved in with his mother, and is in the process of losing his house. Unemployment payments just ran out. He soon will have to go on public assistance.“You come home one day, and she’s gone. The kids are gone,” he said. “It is a very sad time.“Everything I’ve worked for, for myself andthe family, that’s all been lost because of this situation. It’s all gone down the drain.”Child support in the temporary' plan was established while he was still working, at half of his income at the time — $410 a month. He also was left with all of the bills incurred up to the time his wife left.He unsuccessfully tried to get the support reduced after he had to retire. The effort cost him $500 in legal fees.“A responsible father pays child support, and I want to support my children. But considering my income and my needs, I’m not in a position to pay much,” he said. “My heart says one thing, but reality says another. I cannot even afford the medication to fight my disease. I feel this support schedule is unrealistic.” He questioned the fairness of the support even before he lost his income. Fifty percent is high, he said, and becomes even higher when considering the money he spends on the children when they are in his custody, and the cost of driving to and from Ephrata to pick them up and take them home.He tried to win full temporary custody of the children, and lost. Hoy said his only victory inLarry Hoy of Walla Walla currently is in volved in court hearings to finalize support and custody of his children.court was winning visitation rights.“I have to agree with Father’s Rights andSee ^ FATHER, page 4.
