Cazzie Russell, making basketball a major sport once again at Michigan, climaxed a magnificent college career by being named player of the year and then signed a big bonus contract with the New York Knickerbockers. Russell averaged 30.8 points a game, but was nosed out for the scoring title by Dave Schellhase of Purdue, who averaged 32.54, andDave Wagnon of Idaho State,barely missing the title at 32.50.Schellhase’s margin over War-non was the narrowest in the historv of major college basketball.All * AmericanRussell was named to the All-American team for the second straight year, joined by Schellhase, Clyde Lee of Vanderbilt, Dave Bing of Syracuse and Jim Walker of Providence, the lone junior in the top five.Syracuse scored more points per game than any major college team ever had — a blistering 99 points a game.
