There should not be the disparity of $85,-000 per annum between the salaries of the president of the United States and the chief justice of the supreme court, especially when it is a fact that occasions might arise when the chief justice of the United States supreme court might serve as the president of the United States, so that it would indicate that the judiciary might at least be considered in calibre ona plane with the executive department.♦ ♦WHAT IS HIS INTEREST IN IT ?The Hammond justices have quite a problem which, as a body, they have not yet been able to solve. It is: What interest has County Clerk Short-ridge, formerly of Hammond, in heading a lobby at Indianapolis for the pur-of fighting the bill which would grant him the power to issue mar-poseriage ^censes in the Lake superior court, as was done during the Wheeler administration of affairs in that office? One or twro of the squires are quiteready with their answers, but whether they could prove their assertions or not is another question. No blame is attached to the Crown Point justices for fighting against the bill, for it would mean a great deal to them.
