45 CENTS AN HOUR FOR PAVING WORKA committee from the Unemployed Worker*’ Union, headed by A. H. Monteith, was assured today by the city council that if the plan to pave Maiden Lane from Fourth to Twen-tieth street is carried out, a scale of at least 45 cents an hour for unskilled labor will be required.Monteith and members of his committee appeared before the council to inquire as to what wage scale, if any, was to be established for the contemplated work. John Saundera, street commissioner, replied that the city engineer’s estimate on the project placed wages at 45 cents an hour. Saunders and other commissioners said it is their intention, when and if a contract for the paving is awarded, to require such a wage scale to be maintained.
