THE EVENING NEWS.Another Terrible Mining Accident. We have to record another shocking mining accident, attended with loss of life. It occurred about 8 o’clock last evening at theworks of the Ophir Company. (Virginia,) and was occasioned by the giving way of timbers placet! for the sirpport of a tunnel.— It appears that a few weeks ago a tunnel wasrun into the side of the hill for a distance of about twenty feet and a shaft sunk. The roof of the tunnel was about ten or fifteen feet from the ton of the ground outside, and timbered up. Yesterday it was feared that the timbering immediately over the mouth of the shaft would give way and precipitate all the earth above ints it, and several men were set to work ou the outside to dig down until they came to the tuuncl timber, which they were to repair. It was a dangerous job, for if the ground should give wav beneath them they were sure to fall an immense depth into the shaft immediately below. There were four meu on the outside, and three at the mouth of the shaft inside, when the timbers broke through, and the catastrophe occurred. The names of those outside were Win. Bone. M’m. Sullivan, John Tobin and another.— Those in-ide were named James Bennett, Patrick MeCartv and Pat. Gonin. Bone was buried beneath the mine at an unknown depth. Sullivan received a severe cut iu the head, and is badly hurt; and auother man, was injured by a timber falling on his head, nnd had his leg crushed. Patrick McCartv________v. r ____V i eg in i a.
