The Lieut, came the next morning and asked for his mistress. They went into the parlor. The children went out.Again Lieut. Fortesque called at 12:30 and asked Tom where the Mrs. was. When told she was upstairs, the Lieut, went up. Saw him afterwards come out from her room. Tom described her dress and said it was not a day time dress. Thomas had the first floor to look after. Andrew was the superintendent of the second floor. His master treated his mistress very well.There was a touch of the pathetic in the court room Wednesday afternoon when Howard Taggart, the brother of the major, who had given evidence earlier in the case that was damaging to the defendant. Howard had made overtures to Mrs. Taggart in regard to reconciliation, but Mrs. Taggart had refused. Howard said he went to get his sister-in-law’s terms to see what he could do in the matter.“You kissed her goodbye when you left her did you not?’’ said Smyser.“I won’t say that I did,’’ he said, and added a moment later, “I won’t say that I didn’t.”“I usually kissed her and embraced her in a brotherly way,” he said a moment later.“Do you mean to tell the court,” said Smyser in a low passionate voice, “that when you kissed and embraced this little woman as you have admitted you did in a brotherly way, that you knew you were kissing a woman guilty of the terrible things of which she ischarged.”“I can't say that I did” said Howard.Mrs. Taggart’s eyes filled with tears while this little incident was taking place.Mrs. D. C. Boyd, an Orrville lady, was the first after dinner to be the target of Wertz's questions. She lived near the defendant's home and saw:Billy very frequently about her house.
