Cure-All 'Ozone' Machine Quartet Guilty of FelonyOAKLAND (JP) — Four men pleaded guilty Wednesday to felony conspiracy charges for selling nearly 3.000 “ozone generators” to cure a variety of diseases, including cancer.Superior Judge James A. Agee set May 26 'for hearing probation reports and sentencing.The defendants, free on $2,500 bail each, are Fred Stephens, 60, of Balboa, head of the United Ozone Co. of Brea, Orange County, manufacturer of the contraption; J. H. Effenberg, 59, Turlock, former missionary in China and head of Calozone, the sales organization; and salesmen G. W. Kelm, 59, Lodi, and R. Walters Garrett, 67, Oakland.Each pleaded guilty to a felony conspiracy charge to violate the Pure Food and Drug Act, which carries a maximum penalty of 3 to 3 years imprisonment, and a $5,000 fine, or both. A second count was dismissed.Milton Duffy, chief of the state bureau of food and drug inspection, said the men, arrested last Nov. 13, sold about 3.000 of the devices throughout California for $150 each, or nearly $500,000.
