W. 0. SHIELDS, 42,WORLD WAR VET, DIES AT MASSENAMumm, la., April 6.—(Special)—Winnie O. Shields, 42, veteran of the world war and native of the community, died at his home here Wednesday evening at 7:20, following a lingering illness. He had been in poor health for many months and had recently returned from the Veterans hospital in Des Moines and the Hines hospital in Chicago.Mr. Shields enlisted in the motor transport corps of the U. S. army at Fargo, N. D., on Oct 8, 1918. He was located at Waco and San Antonio, Texas, and was discharged in April, 1919.Winnie was the son of Charles and Minnie Yarger Shields and was bom on a farm near here Oct. 20, 1897. They farmed for several years and he was later custodian at the school until his health failed.Surviving are the widow and four children: Ruth Jane, who is employed at the Farmers 8avings bank; Gertrude, a senior and Phyllis, a freshman, in high school, and Charles, a third grade pupil. One son died in infancy. Also surviving are the parents; three sisters, Mrs. ilds Plstt, Mrs. Ethel Vsn Meter and Mrs. Frances Marlowe of Maa-sena; and two brothers, Charles, of Arthur, N. D., and Ted of Fargo, N. D.Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the Catholic church here, Rev. Flavin officiating.
