TROPICAL WIND NEARS FLORIDAAil Of State Is Alerted For Severe HurricaneMIAMI, Fla., Sept. 14—(AP)— Winds estimated at 150 m-ph. were reported to have struck Turk’s island in the British West Indies today as a gieat hurricane ■whirled toward the Florida coast.The weather bureau observer at Turk’s island said the center of the hurricane blasted the island about 1.30 a. m. (E.S.T.) today with 150 m p.b. winds at the height of the storm.The Turk’s island station previously had been off the air forlishrng communication with the XT. S. weather bureau in Miami.At 2 p. m. it was estimated the storm was about 500 miles southeast of Miami* * *MIAMI. Fla, Sept. 14— [INS)—A tropical hurricane with galesup to 100 miles an hour and more swept the Southeastern Bahamas today and headed tor ihe Florida coast.The Miami weather bureau warned that residents of Honda, all of the Bahama Islands and Northern Cuba should remain on the alert for further advisories during the day.The center of the hurricane hit Turks island in the Southeastern Bahamas at 3:30 a. m and at 4 30 a. m. swept over toe three Caicos Islands to the northwest with its fury undiminished.At this point it was about 050 miles southeast of Miami t and moving in a west noi thwestward direction at from 16 to IS miles an hour.Reports coming m from the area struck by the terrific gale said wind velocities were more than 100 miles an hour over a small path at the center ot the hurricane, diminishing as the distance increased from the center of the storm.The weather bureau said the indications were for a continued movement of the storm in lull; hurricane force in its present-west-northwestward directions.Naval authorities evacuated all; planes at the Miami .Naval Air! station.Army storm observers who; flew into the area reported on their return they had encountered winds up- to 135 miles an;hnnr
