Tobacco and Firearms Monday joined agents from the Illinois Department of Law Enforcement in raiding the home of William Earl ‘ Billy’ Dauber at 336 Ashland ave nue in Crete township, near Steger.Dauber was not arrested and no charges have been filed against him at this timeJOHN RUGGERO, supervisor of the federal agency’s organized crime office, told The Star: “This is quite a wide inves tigation, and only the starting point, so I cannot comment further at this timeRuggero said evidence confiscated at Dauber's home Monday will be turned over to a federal grand jury soon with other evidence gathered by federal agents in the investigationThere have been no indictments or charges filed against any suspects in the probe at this time.Dauber is described by the Chicago Crime commission as having crime syndicate ties to an organized car theft and chop shop operation in the Chicago area.RUGGERO said the federal and state agencies raided Dauber’s home Monday on a closed search warrant, which means the agency cannot reveal what it was looking for or obtained in the search. Ruggero said what was confiscated involves violations of federal lawAnother Chicago area newspaper reported last week that among the things confiscated at the Dauber home Monday were firearms and records which reportedly detail a car theft enterprise, including a list of names and addresses of area persons reportedly involved in the operation ‘Kuggero would not comment to The Star on that report, but said the overall investigation involves more than the probe of stolen cars and firearmsA spokesman for the Illinois Department of Law Enforcement said that agency “was only there to assist the Treasury department’’ during Monday’s raid on Dauber’s homeDAUBER was convicted of interstate car theft in 1975 in U.S. District court in Chicago with three other area persons. Convicted with him in that case were Steven Ostrowsky of Flossmoor, Jack Schnadenberg of Indiana and Joseph Ma-rek of Blue Island.Ostrowsky was slain gangland-style two years ago outside a car parts shop he operated in South Cook county.
