Riot at Westville.(Special Telegram to the Observer.)Westville, Ind. Sept. 22.—Mrs. Emma Molloy was invited by the citizens of Westville to address them on the subject of temperance to-night. The meeting was held in Cattron Hall. The lady had hardly commenced speaking when John Kelly and Tom Concannon, saloon keepers of the place, summoned a mob and commenced howling under the windows. It was like hell let loose. The little woman kept on until her voice was completely drowned in the uproar, when about half the men in the hall sprang to their feet and announced their determination to quell the mob. Mrs. Molloy paused. lt;Dr. Fravel, accompanied by Charlie Ruggles, w’ent out and quietly asked them to cease such demonstrations, when Kelly gave the Doctor a bruise over the right eye and tore his coat to tatters, while a doyen or more held Charlie and the Doctor’s friends off. The Marshal had gone home at the first demonstration and sneaked under the bed, where he was found trembling an hour later when the lecture was ended.Finding themselves unablo to quell the riot the citizens returned to the hall where, for an hour, Mrs. Molloy talked against the uproar.— At last a steam threshor was brought upon the ground and persistently blown for about half an hour, but determined not to be beaten the speaker ended her remarks, coming 3 off victorious. The rioters are still yelling like demons through the r streets, and the town has not an officer capable of enforcing the law. But the end is not yet.Congressional.
