Man charged in stabbingA 21-year-old Sugar Creek man was charged with first-degree assault with a deadly weapon Sunday in connection with the stabbing Friday of a 50-year-old Independence man.The victim, Billy W. Johnson, Route 2, was listed this morning in satisfactory condition after surgery at the Medical Center of Independence. Police said he suffered eight stab and slice wounds to the chest, armpit, buttocks and finger.Ricky J. Williams, Route 1, Sugar Creek, was arraigned before Jackson County Associate Circuit Judge James V. Horn, who set bond at $15,000. Williams remained in the Jackson County Jail this morning.The stabbing allegedly occurred about 9:45 p.m. in front of the victim’s house, which is on Old Lexington Road, or Coursedale Road, which runs off U.S. 24 east of the Mc-Cune School.The victim’s wife, Norma R. Johnson, told police Williams came to the front door of their residence. Police said they were told Williams had a surprised look on his face when the Johnsons answered the door.The Johnsons admitted him to their home because he had been a family friend for several years and used to live nearby, Mrs. Johnson said.The three talked for 10 or 15 minutes, then Williams asked the Johnsons to come outside to look at his new car, she said. The victim went outside, and his wife went to get a sweater, she said.When she returned to the front door, she said she saw her husband fall to the ground with the suspect allegedly on top of him, but she was unaware of the stabbing.Police said two neighbors who were returning home in a car saw Johnson in need of help and chased a fleeing car but lost sight of it. The two neighbors took Johnson to the hospital.Williams turned himself in at the Independence Police Building about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.Police said several knives were found in the suspect’s car and one knife was found at his mother’s house. Police said they have not determined officially what knife the victim was stabbed with.Police said other related offenses are being investigated. A preliminary hearing on the assault charge was set for Oct. 2.
