Officers Cited In Killing CaseNILES l¥)—A six-man coroner's jury has cited two state police who ran down and killed holdup man Bruce McLeod of Pontiac for •‘courageous action.ftAt the same time the Berrien County jury condemned the practice of sending law enforcement officers alone on dangerous assignment st citing the kidnaping of Cass County deputy Fred Gardner by McLeod.The jury sitting Monday commended state troopers Andrew ■ Mutli and Patrick Lyons. They asked that the troopers’ action be contained in a full report at state , police headquarters.Muth and Lyons chased McLeod, a 23-year-old ex-convict, Saturday and shot him down. It was the endof a wild crime spree that began Friday night when McLeod robbed a Highland Park supermarket of $6,000.McLeod then kidnaped two motorists, stole three cars and disarmed two deputies, kidnaping one of them. Muth and Lyons ran McLeod down in a fast automobile chase. Muth testified to the jury that he fired twice in the air and McLeod had fired twice at him before he shot the desperado.The jury said Muth had acted ‘•only in the line of duty” and “at great personal risk to his own life.”Meanwhile in Bloomfield township near Pontiac, police found two sacks containing $608. They said 'the monev was probably part of the loot McLeod had gathered in the robbery.When he was shot, state police at .Niles found S3,975 on his body.
