B8Sandusky RegisterFRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2001Police: Man’s attack leaves cops injuredPERKINS TWP.A Sandusky man allegedly hit two PerkinsTownship police officers, picking one up off the ground and forcing him into a wall early Thursday morning, police said.The tussle left one Perkins police officer receiving X-rays for a possible broken thumb and another officer sustaining abrasions to his arm, pain in his wrist and swelling in his knee.A PerkinsTownship police officer stopped John Byington, 42, of the 400 block of Lake Court, driving eastboundonWest Bogart Road at 2:39 a.m. because there were no rear lights on his car.Byington allegedly appeared intoxicated. 1 le was instructed to get out of his car to take an alcohol test, but he would not cooperate, police said.When Byington began walking back to his car, the officer grabbed him by the arm but he broke the officer’s grip. He got behind the wheel and the officer grabbed him again, trying to pull him out of the seat, police said.Byington swung at the officer while putting the car in gear, police said. Police sprayed Byington in the eyes with pepper spray, butByington pushed the officer and sped off.Police said Byington drove about a block to his home and pulled in the garage. The officer followed him and was able to stop the garage door with his foot as it was closing.The officer pulled his gun and ordered Byington to the ground, but Byington pushed the officer again, police said. The officer put away his gun and struck Byington with his baton while he was trying to enter the house. But Byington locked himself in the dark house.When police backup arrived, officers entered the house and found Byington in the hallway with his fists clenched. Police said Byington picked one officer off the ground and the two of them went into the wall together.Officers struck Byington, but he continued to kick and swing at officers after they apprehended him, police said. Byington was taken to Erie County Jail. Bond was set at $21,000.I le was charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer, two counts of resisting arrest, fleeing, obstructing official business, insufficient lights and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
