Harry Verdick, 39, Found Dead in Bed- In East End Home By GORDON HOLTE Republican Herald Staff Writer 30-year-old father of no children died at his home early Sunday — about seven hours after he was injured during an alterca tion with a companion on West 6th street. Dead is Harry Verdick, 1067 E. Sth St, who died at his home at 1:30 a. m. Sunday of a skull fracture. Verdick,who apparently died during his sleep, was found to have suffered a hemor rhage into the brain cavity. Held for questioning at the city jail, meanwhile, is Norman Henze, 2, ‘est E. 4th St., the other prin cipal in the scuffle that ensued outside the Cozy Corser Bar, 901 W. 4t. St. at about :40 p.m Saturday. Verdick is reported to have been failed by one of Henze's blows and apparently suffered the fracture when his head hit the sidewalk. Didn’t Want Doctor After he had apparently recover ed from the blow, his wife related, Verdick declined medical attention and said that he wished to visit hs mother, Mrs. Mary Verdick, whth lives between Minnesota City and Stockton. Mrs. Verdick said that she, her husband and the seven children, drove to the Verdick home, stayed there for some time and then re turned to Winona. He didn't seem quite him self,” Mrs. Verdick recalled, “he was kind of fuzzy and he complained about his head hurt ing but he didn’t want to go to a doctor or to the hospital.’ After they returned home, Mrs. Feretieys said, the family went to bed. I awakened once and he was sleeping there is bed, the wife de clared. Then, a little later, I woke up and noticed that he was wt moving. I called to him and asked if he was all right and when he didn’t answer I felt his chest and noticed there didn’t seem to be a heart beat. Mrs. Verdick then went to the home of her husband’s brother, Tom Verdick, who lives about four blocks away. The brother went to his brother's home, determined that his brother apparently was dead and called a funeral director, Coroner Called Winona County Coroner R. B. Tweedy was called to investigate and pronounced that the death was caused by the skull fracture. Dr. Tweedy said, however, that no coroner's jury will be called to investigate the cir cumstances of the death. . Sunday morning, Assistant Chief of Police Fverett Laak and De tective Marvin Meier went to Henze's home and took him to police headquarters for question. tna. Chief of Police A. J. Bingold said this morning that Henze has ac knowledgedhat he was engaged i the fight with Verdick. The po lce chief said that no charge has been filed in the case and that Henze is merely being held at po lce headquarters for questioning. He said that he expected to con vey with County Atty. W.
