Sept. 2S.—The old adage, of the “best laid plans of mice and men oft gang aglay,’’ wasnever better exemplified than in the recent operations of Jack Burke, who is a fugitive from justice, after skipping his bonds in the Bake Circuit Court, after two of his pals had plead guilty to being in a conspiracy with him to pick pockets of Bake county fair visitors.Now that Burke has evaded, for the time at least, the earring out of justice, St is permissable to satisfy some of the public curiosity as to the operations of Burke and his henchmen. and just what evidence the determined gang of men back of the prosecution had, to land Burke and his pals.The beginning of the long chain of evidence that was to convict Burke, started when the first link was forged on July 24. when Burke approached City Marshall Platt with a scheme of his fertile brain, to “fix'’ that official so that he and three or four good men from Chicago could work the street cars and the crowds at the Bake county fair for their loose change.Marshal Platt told Burke he would think the proposition over, but in so doing he neglected to inform Burke that he would think it over with some of his friends directly interested in Burke’s attempt to an easy but unholy living. Not twenty minutes after the conversation with Burke Officer Platt had made arrangements for a conference with 'Mayor Krost.
