SELMER: to continue crackdownMeNairy County Sheriff Buford Pusser has pledged lhat he will keep an “organized erime syndicate” from reopening bootlegging, gambling and confidence games in the southern part of the county.“I cracked down oti them and pul them out of business,” said the husky Pusser who was wounded and his wife killed in an ambush in that part of the minty Aug. 12. The 23-year-old sheriff claimed the shooting was in retaliation for his dampdown on the criminal element along the Tennessee-Mississippi border.“i’ve cost them a lot of money by dosing them but they’re still closed and they’re, going to stay closed,” Pusser declared, “I’m on the job every day and so are my deputies.”Pusser said the illegal whisky and gambling ‘'flourished for 10 or 15 years” in that area of the West Tennessee county.
