The Noble County Outlaws.The recent train robbery near Ken-dallvilie has called to mind the earlyhistory of Noble county, when the whole tier of counties for two hundred miles, were infested with thieves and counterfeiters. There were probably no murderB committed, or at least we know of but one, and that was the killing of a man at Rochester by Lechner, in 1840, for which he was hanged. There were many apparently respectable people who were more or less connected with these bands of thieves and counterfeiters, but so remotely that the law could not reach them. Cut the “Regulators” made a pretty clear sweep of the whole gang as far back as1858.The Rev. E. F. Hasty, a Methodist minister, who resided in Goshen some years ago, gives a short account of the Regulators in the Indianapolis News, which is quite interesting as far as it goes. We only extract that portion of the article which is of local interest:The general assembly of Indiana passed an act, which was approved March b, 1852, authorizing the formation of companies for the detection and apprehension of horse thieves and other felons. The first company organizedin accordance with the acts was called the “LaGrange County Rangers.” About thirty-seven companies of regulators were formed in Northern Indiana, such as Angola Regulators, Albion Rangers, Allen Reconnoiterers, Bi u if ton Regulators, lie Kalb County Horse Thief Detecting Society, Eel River Regulators, Fremont Rangers, Independent Seli-Frotectors, Leesburg Horse Company, Fly mouth Regulators,lit _ vi: l .. 4* Ilf____ . ...
