He gave up only after hi• platol was empty.McLeui s wild ride across the state started after he robbed Detroit store manager Lester Thompson of $5 000 in store receipts shortly before midnight.About three hours Inter Patrolman Richard Hoffman of Bloomfield township went up to check on u parked enr in which a lone man, be.ieved to be -McLeod, was silting counting rolls of money.McLood outdrew Hoffman, snapped his handcuffs on the officer’s ' wrists, took his gun and drove 1 away,A short time later McLeod stuck a gun in Charles Scbrelber's back ns the latter was parking his car 1 in the garage at his Pontiac home, 1At gun point he forced Schreiber to dihe him toward Chicago, heading through Jackson and then onSchreiber pleaded that his wife would be worried and asked permission to call her. McLeod let him stop at Tekonslia where he telephoned his wife that I've got to drive a hold-up man to Chicago.Mrs. Schreiber called police. A state-widp alarm went out. About , •I a.m. the car wus spotted outside a diner near Caseopolis by Cass county Deputy Sheriff Fred Gardner.He waited for McLeod to come ! out, but even with his gun drawn the deputy was overpowered. Me-’ then forced the deputy tofrom Niles whero he handcuffed Gardner to s tree after first forcing hlra to hail a passing motorist, Le Roy Clemann of Niles.Taking Clemar.n’s yellow convertible, McLeod again headed for Chicago. But Slate Troopers Andrew MutU and Patrick Lyons spotted him near Galien. One of the , officer's shots struck the car and it swerved from the road.McLeod decided to shoot it cut. Only when his pistol wag empty and he was bleeding badly from 1 three bullet wounds did he aurren-The troopers took him to Niles hospRal where he died about 8 a.m. Before he died he told them he was an ex-convict.Por.tiac police said McLeod was sent to the State Vocational School for Boys at Lansing as a juvenile delinquent when he was 15 years old. He was convicted of reckless driving last March. Pontiac records showed no adult offense but it was believed he had been sent to prison for a crime committed in Lansing.State police said he had $3,947 when captured.him to a point five miles, der.
