S. El Paso Women Assert TheyGive Regular Fines”Deputy constables today denied that they have been collecting vagrancy fines from girls and womenwho live in South El Paso rooming houses add hotels.Myrtle Johnson, one of six women who were arrested in a raid onSouth El Paso rooming houses, complained In police court that she paida fine in justice court this monthand didn't believe she would have to pay another.Dockets of Peace Justices R. B.Rawlings and M. V. Ward show that40 women have been fined $1 and $13 costs on vagrancy charges in the last three months.' In each case the docket was marked: “Defendant plead guilty and $1 and $13 costs fine assessed.Deputy Constables Barry Roberts and H. Q. Garcia appeared as complainants against the women.Women and landladies in South El Paso rooming houses said that men who represented themselves asofficers collected fines from them. The men ten the girls that theymust pay a $14 fine onoe a month,the landladies said.Roherts denied collecting money from the women.“No arrests are made unless thereis a legitimate complaint made against some woman, Roberts said.
