Violence ClosesHouston SchoolHOUSTON i AP»—Smiley High School and other schools in the Northeast Independent School District were closed today following an outbreak of racial troubleThree teen-agers were injured Thursday as violence broke out at Smiley and at San Houston High School in the Houston Independent School District, Smiley had the worst encounter when about 200 pupils clashed with rocks and clubs A shoving match between a white girl and a black girl prompted 10 Negro boys to walk out of class at Sam Houston. Police moved in to prevent a confrontation between blacks and whites.Following the clash at Smiley, two buses loaded with junior high school pupils were set upon by a group of blacks at an intersection near the school.One bus driver, R. J. I^n-drum, said about 30 blacks hurled rocks, bottles and sticks. Five girls were slightly injured when windows were broken.Police were first called to Smiley about 10:30 a.m. when some 75 white pupils who were boycotting classes began milling around in front of the school.They were protesting what they termed preferential treatment by the administration to Negroes.During lunch time, blacks andwhites began jeering one another and then one pupil ran through the halls saying blacks were stripping cars in the parking lot. police said.•‘It was like sticking a match to kerosene,” said Police Sgt. J. N. Smith. “It spread through the halls and people started coming from everywhere.“I was too busy dodging xlubs,” he said.
