FOR ATTEMPTEDWillie Kirkland Hanged, Body Dragged Through Streets of Thomasville.DEPOSITED ON COURTHOUSE LAWNMob of 75 Men Took Negro After Girl Twice Identified Him.THOMASVILLE, Ga., 'Sept. 25— CAP)—Willie Kirkland, 20 year old negro convict, saicl to have been identified by a ninc-year-o!d school girl as the man who attempted toattack her, was lynched here early today,Kirkland, serving a sentence on the chain gang for horse stealing, was taken from Sheriff Gordon E. Davis and several deputies who were seeking to transfer him to a nearby town for safe keeping.The men who seized the negro numbered between 50 and 75. Kirkland was hanged from the limb of a tree In Magnolia Gardens, a suburb, about a mile from the heart of Thomasville.After hanging him. the men lied his body to the rear of a truck anddrove to the city, circled the public square and deposited him finally on the court house lawn.Xv Irk land was arrested yesterday along with five other negroes.During the night it was said that Kirkland, in custody of officers, was taken from the jail to the home of the girl, who Identified him. Shortly after daylight lie was taken before the girl who again said he was the one who attempted to attack her. It was alter this second visit that officers sought to spirit him away but were balked by the mob.Extra guards were placed around the Jail during the night while a number of townspeople kept an all-night vigil hi front of the building. There was no attempt at violence though, however.A'posse estimated at 1,000 men was formed here soon after the attack on the girl was re ported Many of those in the posse were armed and they searched the swamps in the vicinity for several hours with, the aid of dogs. The hunt was continued even after Kirkland had been placed under arrest.Doubt that- Kirkland was the person who attacked the girl was said to Jiave been expressed today by the warden of the convict camp.
