Karmire, being duly sworn, says upon his oath that on or about the 22nd day of Sept., A. D. 1886, at the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, one Mollie Van-cleave, then and there being, did unlawfully and feloniously threaten to accuse said Charles E. Karmire, then and there a married man, of certain immorality, to-wit, with being the father of an unborn bastard child, of which she then and there claimed to be pregnant, which threat so made was by a written letter and communication by her, the said Mollie Vancleave, then and there sent to said Charles E. Karmire, in the words and figures following, to-wit:Shelbyville, Sept. 22, 1886.Mr. diaries Caremire.Dear Sir—It is with a sad heart that I try to write to you. I am in more trouble than any woman on earth can bear and no way of getting out of it unless you kindly assist me. You are a man of business and have got plenty of this world’s goods while I am a poor woman and no way of getting along only as I work for what I get. While at your house I done your work the best I could and tried to please your lady. Now I am in a bad fix, in a family way, and don’t know what on earth to do. I would like very much for you to help me out. I don’t want your wife to get a holt of this nor no one else or I would have come to the store. There is a party that would swear they seen the whole thing if nessery, but I don’t want to (do) anything like that if you will kindly help me out. You would hardly miss what would be a great deal to mo and God above will bless you hereafter. Just think for a moment, if you was in my place, and it is not my fait, if I wras called before God this minute. I want you to drop me a note in the office,and tell me what you can do immediately, for I want to go away from town until I get all-right. You will never lose anything by befriending a woman in my condition, but if not you are sure to. I guess you know who this is from, but maybe I had better tell you if you will do what is write, no one will ever know anything about it, that is the reason I did not come to you in person. Answer this in the name of Mollie Barnes, and no one will get it. I want to go away before everything is too far gone. Answer as soon as you get this from Mrs. Mollie Vancleave.Please answer soon and save trouble. I will leave this week.”Which said charge and accusationif made would tend to degrade anddisgrace him, the said Karmire andwhich gaid threat so made and sentto the said Karmire, was then andthere made and sent to said Karmirewith intent then and there to extort gain, and obtain from said Karmire sums of money, chattels and valuable securities, the exact amount of which, and the particular characterand extent of which are to the affiant/unknown.i#2nd paragraph—And said affiant Charles E. Karmire being duly duly sworn further says upon his oath, and by way of second count and further charge that on or about the 24th day of Sept., A. D. 18SG, at the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, said Mollie Vancleave, then and there, being, did unlawfully and feloniously, verbally and orally, make threats that she would accuse and charge him, said Charles E. Karmire, then and there a married man, with certain immorality, which if true would tend to and would degrade and disgrace the said Karmire, to-wit: That he, the said Karmire, was then and there the father of a bastard child, of which she, the said Mollie Vancleave, then claimed to be X^regnant, which said threats were then and there made by her, said Mollie Vancleave, with intent thenand there to extort gain and obtain of 'said Karmire of his monies the sum of §50 and other valuable chattels, monies and securities, the exact nature of which is unknown to said affiant, Charles E. Karmire.Subscribed and sworn to before me this Sept. 26, 1886.Ij. J. Hackney, Notary Public, Shelby County, Indiana.Mrs. Vancleave was arrested by Constable Laws this morning and arraigned before ’Squire Ellis at twoo’clock, by whom, the probabilities are, she will be required to give a bond of §500 for her appearance in court. Her husband, Henry Vancleave, and Thomas Anderson, herfather, were sentenced to one year in the penitentiary at the May term of Court for larceny.branches, at one fare for the round trip, except no round trip rate will be less' than 25 cts. C., says: “The case of John Q. Thompson, editor of the Sunday Chronicle, charged with criminal libel in publishing an article reflecting on Frank E. Burnside, a printer formerly employed in the office of the Chronicle, was called for trial in the police court this afternoon. Thompson’scounsel, Thomas H. Miller, entered a plea of not guilty. Mr. Miller read the article to the court, and, without hearing any testimony, the court dismissed the case. Thompson and * hiswife were also acquitted of a charge of receiving some type plates alleged to have been stolen from William J. Armstrong, editor of the Free Press. Ingalls, president of the C., L, St. L. C. road, is said to be fully determined to build a St. Louis line. When he named the road the Cincinnati, Indianapolis, St. Louis Chicago he intended sooner or later to build a St. Louis line. Should he secure control of the I., D. S. road he doubtless would extend it to St. Louis; If not he will build from Columbus to St, Louis. At the present time he has parties looking for the most feasible route to build either of the extensions above mentioned. That Mi*.
