The Same Rope Used With Which John Lomax Was Executed.(Special Dispatch to The Times.)ROXBT.'RY, VA., September 23.—Bur-r* il Johnson, the young negro who was sentenced a month ago to hang for an attempted criminal assault on Mrs. Mas-gi© Clow, expiated his crime on the gallows at New Kent C. IT. early this morning. The execution was very quiet and j only sixteen persons witnessed the hanging, though there were several hundred applications.Uev. \V. W. Harris, a colored minister.had been with the boy at intenraU for | several days, and though he never seemed to realize the awful doom that awaited him. he professed conversion and was baptized In the jail enclosure a short time before he was hung by this faithful colored preacher.The trap was sprung at 7:20 o'clock, and the negro died almost without a movement, as his neck was broken by the fall. In three minutes Dr. Turner, of Lanexa. pronounced him dead.Funeral services were held over th*3 body in the jail enclosure and the body was later turned over to the negro's parents, iThe attack made by this young negro on Mrs. Clow was most daring and brutal. and'though she fought with despera- : tion she escaped little short of her life.She was overtaken in the road so near her own house that her cries were heard by her husband, though not understood by him at the time, and the injuries the negro inflicted on her face by beatingher with a rock were visible when the 1 trial occurred, a week later.The search for the prisoner. th«* arrest and speedy trial are all well remembered, and there Is a feeling of profound satisfaction throughout the county that the extreme punishment so well deserved was meted out to this human brute through the process of law instead of at the hands of its excited citizens.The same rope used to hang John Lomax a week ago in Westmoreland county for a similar crime was utilized in the execution of Burrell Johnson.
