The father killed her when she refused, the son said. The elder Saikin insisted his son was the killer. In passing sentence. Criminal Court Judge Philip Romiti said ‘‘This is a very grave and very serious offense which is borne out by the fact that the murderand murderer may have to go unpunished.” ,The two-to-tbree-year sentence was recommended by Assistant State’s Atty, Matthew Moran. Saikin’s lawyers said they would appeal and asked that Saikin be released on bond. The elder Saikin told jurors his son admitted slaying the girl, who had lived in the family’s farm east of Chesterton, Ind.. with both father and son. and that Joel had threatened to tell authorities his father committed the crime. The body of Miss Scott was dug up Feb. 20 from a shallow grave on the farm near Chesterton. Ind. It had been entombed in a steel drum partially filled with formaldehyde.A Cook County Criminal Court jury deliberated two hours and 45 minutes Monday before freeing Samuel Saikin on the murder charge. Jury foreman Carl Bastain said, however, that bothSaikin and is son “were guilty of knowledge of the crime and so it had to be a conspiracy.’’ He said the jury felt there was not enough evidence for a murder charge against either man.Assistant State’s Atty. Thomas Tully said Samuel Saikin could be sentenced to 1 to 3 years in prison on the charge of obstructing justice. He said he had “not considered” the possibility of bringing any charges against the younger Saikin.dorPorter CountyCWeatherCloudy with showers and thunderstorms likely early this evening.
