The men started running and Smith opened fire. One of the bandits fell into, a ditch, apparently hit, lint, regained his feet and disappeared.Early Sunday a Trenton doctor was called to the home of Robert Norris’s mother in Trenton and found Norris critically wounded. He sent him to a hospital and notified authorities.Sheriff Orlando Mitten and County Attorney Kenneth Mumma went to Trenton Tuesday and returned with Hughes ami Me Carl, who were suspected due to their associationswith the wounded man. MeCarl •was brought to Chariton in order tjiat the suspects woud he separated during the investigation.Hughes is said to have confessed that he was one of the men who attempted the holdup.McCarl. according to local officers. snys he was asleep in Ills car at Hie time of the hold-iin, awaiting the return ofHughes and Norris, He c Inf ms that his wife was with him and that they had 110 knowledge, of the actions of their compan-tons. *Charges of assault with intent to rob will be filed against i Hughes and Norris, while Mr. and Mrs. McCarl will probably face charges of conspiracy or of being accomplices.Tile first story told by Mr. and Mrs. McCarl was that Norris was shot during an argument in Missouri over slot machines.The bullet removed from Norris was sent to ballistics experts who will determine if it came fromSmith’s gun.
