O, Sept. 21—Detectives today investigated an alleged plot by which nn attempt wan being made to exort $20,000 Xrom a penitentiaryconvicts wife on the promise of getting his ireedom.A 53-year-old man was charged by Mrs. Louise Hard, of Columbus, with trying to obtain ©10.000 from her to free her husband, William J. Hord. sentenced in 1922 to serve 25 to 20 years on a statutory charge.The man first visited her Sept 23. Mrs. Hord told police She admitted wdxig suspicious from the start, and said sho told tho man she did not have tho money but did have ©4000 In diamondsThe suspect is alleged to have gone to ner home a second time. A private detective, called by Mrs, Hord. was hiding in her home and overheard the conversation.Tho alleged extortioner told her, she said, that he hBd contacts with two * I lgh state officials and a deputy I warden at the penitentiary. The man asserted I y admitted talking to Mrs Hard about getting her husband's freedom but denied any mention of money.
