[iMURDER!Murder Nearly Committed at the Village of Waterloo.Adolphus Case Shoots Charles Hart and Escapes.Blood Hounds on the Trail.m■a'*'iAbout half-past eight o’clock this morning at the home of John Hamilton, in Waterloo, quite a tragedy was enacted.Adolphus Case, a son-in-law of Hamilton, has been absent from home some time in hiding from the authorities charged with stealing a horse from John Welsh, who resides near there. He returned some time last night, and secreted himself in one of the buildings in the hamlet, and this morning at the lower end of the village he made his appearance, as a man by the name of Charles Stevens, who lives with Hamilton, came down the road. He commenced to abuse Stevens and accused him of having improper relations with his (Case’s) wife, during his enforced absence. Stevens walked away from him and went direct to Ha.nilton’s house. Case followed him in and after a war of words drew a revolver, saying he in tended to kill Stevens.John Hamilton, the head of the house had quietly slipped out during the quarrel and notified Charles Hart, who keeps a grocery store across theroad, that Case was at his (Hamilton’s) home and was having trouble with Stevens. Hart had been given a Constable’s powers and held the warrant against Case for horse stealing. He immediately went over and entered the house and told Case that he was under arest. Case jumped back and leveled a revolver at Hart and pulled the trigger, the gun missed fire and Hurt pulled his gun and told him to surrender. This Case would not do and in a decidedly quick manner Hart grabbed Case by the arm, a struggle ensuing. After grappling his man Hart dropped his gun; Case got his hand loose, and righted the revolver which had been “broken” in the struggle and shot Hart, who clung to him until they fell out of a door into the yard. Abraham Troxell took hold of Case, but let him go when Hart fell faitning to the ground. Case started to run and was hit over the head with a stick of wood by Mrs. Hamilton, but managed to get away in the excitement that followed.Troxell carried Hart across the road to his home and Dr. McNutt of this city was sent for. On arriving he found Hart in bed, with an ugly looking hole in the fleshy part of the right leg. The bed clothing was literally soaked with blood. The bullet entered near the groin and took a downward course, and struck a large bone and glanced to the inside. The bullet, however, could not be found. Hart is conscious and can toll about the affair, but is terribly weak from the loss of blood. His recovery is not assured.Bloodhounds were brought from Milton and placed on the would-be murderer’s trail. They took the scent back of the house, across a corn field and down the river bottom and then turned round and went North, and then came toward this city.Case is said to be a bad mau, and though young in years, has been a terror in the neighborhood. He is described as being about five feet and seven inches in heighth, dark hair and complexion and has gray eyes, and is about twenty-two year’s of age. Should Hart dio of his injury, and Case is caught, it will go hard with him as the residents of that vicinity are wrought up to a high pitch of excitement.*ISHIsORO11eS’aJnsPt«tis:S
