Clemens.Charles McGinnis Shot by Bill Smithen for Refusing to Treat.The southwest end of the city, know in common parlance, as “Briartown,” furnished its usual weekly sensation last Sunday afternoon 111 the shape of a shooting affray, in which a negro named William Smithen shot Charles McGinnis, white, in the right breast, producing a painful, and what was at first thought, a latal wound. The particulars of the melee, as far as they can be gathered, are about as follows: Itseems that a number of negroes and whites had congregated at Decker Holmes’ Saloon, at the south end of Scioto street, where they were engaged in drinking, gambling, and various other sports not suitable for the Sabbath day. About half past three o’clock, McGinnis came in, whenSmithen asked him (McGinnis) to treathim. The former objected, when Smithen began cursing, and saying I ni that he considered himself good enough I c,e to drink with McGinnis, and treated the hitter’s refusal to “set ’em up,” as a personal insult. One word brought 011 another, until Smithen drew his revolver, but was asked to put it back in- ce to his pocket, which he refused to do, tli saying “he would not be imposed on.” 1 B McGinnis then left the saloon to avoid . in a fight, but Smithen followed him out, | tl shooting him just as he passed through ! the door.
