Uapt.John H. Adam*, a former reaideut of this city, a brother of the late Capt. D, 0.Adams, was Sheriff of Santa Clara county, Cal., at the Lime Vatquez committed his murders aud robberies,Jand the book givesa history of hie adventures injpursuit of the murderer and his companions; for weoks, he was almost constantly In 'the saddle, and expended $4,000 in attempting to effect an arrest, without avail. The bandit was finally oaptured by other parties and exeouted under tho supervision of Short ff Adams.From a note at the end of the volume, we learn that John U. Adams was born inClinton oounty, Ills., June 13,1920. 'A hen he wae two years old the family removedto Edwardsville, In this oounty, where ho was raised. In 1847 be raised a company for the Mexican war, and wae 19 months In the service, On the 1st of August, 1849, he left for California and went across the plains with a mule team. In 1852, he relumed East end took his family to theGolden State. In 1861, he was elected Supervisor of Santa Clara county, and In 1864 was elected Sheriff, aud held the offioe for three terms. He was again re* elected la 1872 and la 1874. A* thereaders of the TxLzuRArn are aware, thesad news was received here the ih lust., that Capt. Adams was murdered at Davidson's Ranche, near Tuosoa, Arizona, on Monday, the 2d of September, by Mexioan banditti in revenge, it is supposed, for the execution of Vasques.
