Jts foreman said, however, that it had actually deliberated only about seven hours because one of its members was tttkon ill last night and was unable to coullnuo deliberating until after breakfast this morning.. Tho defendant, 20 year old widow, was tried for the slaying of her husband with a shotgun last May 9. She admitted from tlio witness stand that she fired tho shot aa ho lay on tho bed at their homo near here. The defense contended throughout tho three day testimony that a preponderance of the evidence” showed tho defendant to'have been generally insnno at the time of the shooting. Tho husband, Joseph Shellen-bcrger, was aged 26. *Mrs, Shellenberger was sent to the Warren State Hospital for “observation” last July but returned for trialthis month. Dr. Ira A. Darling, hospital superintendent, testified in prosecution rebuttal yesterday that she had “seemed rational” to him.
