YOUNG. GIRL ASSAULTED IN BRQADJAYLIGHTI Revolting Story From Parkersburg1i PARKERSBURG. Sept. 17.— Lizzie Desner, a fourteen year bid orphan girl who ldves with her grandmother on the South Side, was assaulted at the City Park Saturday afternoon about 4 o'clock by a well dressed young inan or Wheeling, who Is now in tho county Jail, but who bo far has failed to divulge his name, though every effort has been made to get him to do so.The Deaner girl went to the show grounds Saturday afternoon to attend the circus'-and was walking around when she was approached by thostranger who began his conversation by asking her if he had not seen her somewhere before. 8he replied In the negative and the two In some manner were drawn Into further conversation, according to the girl's story.The stranger after talking to the girl for some time asked her to take a street car ride with him. To this she consented and after riding around (the outer loop he asked her to get off | with him at the city park. This she at first refused to do. but later con-| seuted and the two walked some dls-• tance to the left of the entrance, ac-, cording to her story. Later tho ; stranger suggested that they walk ov-, er by the big lake and she objecten | again. Re finally caught her by tho arm and Insisted So strongly, she said . that she went with him to a point near I the lake, not believing that his Intentions were evil. No sooner had they arrived at a point near the lake than the stranger, she alleges, threw her to the ground, despite her screams and efforts to get away from him. Her ’^clothing - tras' badly idfn and when Superintendent Young, of the park, I Dr. Monroe and several others arrived on the scene she was so frightened 'and weak that she could hardly apeak. The men grabbed the stranger and attempted to hold him until an officer arrived, but he made a wild dash for liberty and started toward the city ns v fast as lie could run, keeping In the i middle of the street.At Seventeenth street he turned off t and ran up that way. but by that time the patrol wagon came In sight, a hurry up call having been sent In. The horses were given the right of way | and finally overtook the young man 'after he had run eight or ten blocks., He was placed In the wagon and taken Immediately to the office of Magistrate Ruttencutter, where he was committed to jail without ball and a warrant was sworn out for him. The latter had to be issued as John Doe as the stranger positively refused to give his name.Intense Excitement.The stranger’s arrest caused intense excitement. The magistrate's office was soon filled with spectators and It was only with- difficulty that order and quiet could be had. The littlo girl was questioned closely and told precisely the same story as told by tboee who witnessed part of the crime, afterthelr attention was drawn j to the scene of the girl's screams, The case Is much against the stranger, from appearances.(Continued on Page Five.)
