LOCAL/KANSASMonday, September 16,1991 3Group seeks help in drag-abuse preventionBy ORLANDO DE BRUCEJournal Staff Writ* rA Salina organization is seeking grassroots representation for its war on drug and alcohol abuse.The Salina All-American Prevention Partnership wants to recruit people from all segments of the city into the partnership’s effort to prevent drug abuse.The method is an attempt to step away from advice typically given by white-collar professionals who might not understand the real-life experience of an addict.The partnership wants knowledge and advice from a variety of people, including those who have used or are using drugs.‘ ‘We are looking for people of all walks of life, not just the doctors, the lawyers, the blacks or the whites, but everyone,’' said John Roth of the partnership.Salina does have a drug problem* 11 the people of Salina are not ready lor this kind of program, it still will prevail/'— John Roth, group memberThe partnership, with headquarters at 1805 S. Ohio, was awarded a $167,400 grant from the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention in Washington, D.C., to help fight drug abuse. Salina is theonly city in Kansas to receive such a grant.“There is a trauma of drug and alcohol abuse here, Roth said. The big move is getting people involved who have had the experiences. We want to be culturally diverse in Salina and talk to all people.The partnership's staff has scheduled fiveneighborhood meetings this fall to discuss drug awareness and prevention.At the meetings, the partnership will be explained, new members will be recruited and concerns of citizens will be heard.All meetings are from 7 to 8 p.m. The schedule is:■ Tuesday at the Carver Center, 315 N, Second.■ Thursday at Wyatt's Cafeteria Community Room, 2259 S. Ninth.■ Sept. 24 at YWCA, 651E. Prescott.■ Sept. 26 at Friendship Center, 746 Comanche.■ Oct. 1 at Presbyterian Manor Recreation Room, 2601E. Crawford.Information about the meetings has been sent to 1,800 homes in Salina, Roth said. He doesn't know who will attend or what the response will be.“Salina does have a drug problem, Roth said. “If the people of Salina are not ready for this kind of program, it still will prevail. But it’s going to take numbers to get things done.In mid-October, the partnership will compile information from the neighborhood meetings and local statistics about drug abuse from the police and hospitals.The goal is to target local activities and programs that will best meet the community's needs, Roth said.
