Both the president and vice president of the OSA, Jim Engmann and Elaine Smith, denied having any knowledge of the decision to grant the security force additional power.Wolter apparently felt there was no need to nctifythe students as this is considered to be an administrative move to establish a more efficient security unit.A number of students have begun to wonder if granting this additional power to the security force would not open the way for an invasion of their privacy. Peppier said such fears are unwarranted.“This doesn't mean that we’re going to go busting down doors, seizing people and making arrests, he said. “We still have to adhere to certain procedures and regulations.According to Pappler the se-culty force will have the discretion of disposing of a case through the official channels of the law or through the university discipline board. He stated this doesn't necessarily mean his men would be more lenient because they have this extra option. '‘It all depends on the circumstances involved.Peppier asserted that he does not get any particular pleasure out of locking people up. “It’s no fun to lock people up and give them a record for life. What good does that do?He feels his primary mission is to deter and not to apprehend and that he’s not seeking additional power to cause harm to anyone, but only to better safeguard the welfare of the campus.
