An undetermined number of shot* were fired into the homeof Dr. B. E. Murph, Laurel Negro dentist and state leader in the National Association for Advancement of Colored People, a-round 1 a.m. Thursday.Dr. Murph resides at 118 Harrison. He is presently president of the Laurel Chapter of NAACP, advisor to the local Youth Council and a former vice president of the State NAACP.Sgt. George Chancellor, court clerk, for the police department, said that a call came to the department at 1:13 a.m. and Patrolmen Arthur Holden and Martin Jones answered.Sgt Chancellor said the report at police headquarters showed the north side of the house was shot into.Four or five buckshot were heard but no one was hurt.Sgt. Chancellor also said that the report came to police fromA. H. Moody whose address is listed as 128 Harrison, a neighbor.Dr. Murph reported he was awakened when he heard the shots. He estimated four or five shots were fired into the house.“It sounded like an atomic bomb it was so loud,” he said. Dr. Murph reported he and his wife were alone sleeping in a back bedroom.The dentist, who has long been active in NAACP, was a target on June 15 when his home was fired into. He was alone at that time and was not awakened.Murph said the shots Thursday morning, apparently buckshot, “almost knocked out a picture window in the kitchen, and tore screens off a window in the kitchen.”He said some shots were embedded in the walls.Murph said he was notifyingthe FBI of the incident.
