On his way back to prison he escaped from Sheriff F P. Wheatley of Pike county, and was later picked up by St. Louis police. He broke away from them under gunfire and was caught again a month later.Returned to Bowling Green,Morris was placed in leg irons He managed to release himself from the irons and when Sheriff Wheatley, unarmed, opened his cell door Wednesday to serve lunch. Morns pulled a knife on him, took his wallet containing $5 and fled, accompanied by John C. Smith, 18, a car theft suspectBloodhounds from the reformatory located the pair hidden in corn shocks in a field northeast of Bowling Green.Sheriff Wheatley, a bit upset over the whole thing, said he was going to “throw the book” at Morris and would prosecute him for jail break and armed robbery.
