GEORGE H. LANE.The Saddea Death of a Well KnownCounsellor at Law.George H. Lane, one of Burlington’s best known lawyers, died last evening at 5:40 o’clock, at the family residenceon north Fourth street, after an illness of but four days’ duration. 0f Burlington's numerous eminent citizens who have given up life during the last year, this esteemed gentleman’s death is one of the most grievously sudden. For several years Mr. Lane has been troubled more or less with an affliction of the liver, and on last Saturday he felt an increased derangement of that organ, which did not, however, prevent him from going to his office in the forenoon. He remained at home after dinner, and concluded the day in bed, with his condition changed for the worse. Medical skill was unavailing in the complies tions that followed. Congestion of the liver and bowels occurred, and the end was hastened by a fatty degeneration of the heart. Yesterday afternoon the sufferer’s condition tookr fatal turn,and he sank rapidly until death, being parstially conscious until the last, though unable to speak. Friends and relatives who had been summoned by telegraph during the afternoon arrived this morning, too late.Deceased was a native of Franklin, Montgomery county, Ohio. He was born October 12, 1832, and received his early education at college in Cincinnati. Later he read law with Col. David Strawa, of Dayton, Ohio, from which place he came to Burlington in 1856, and has since been a continuous resi* dent here. In 1858 Mr. Lane returned to Dayton and married Miss Mary A. Lewis, who died in this city on the 9th of May, 1871, having borne four children, of whom the eldest daughter, Mary, died September 18, 1877. The others survive their father. The only son, J.Lewis Lane, now resides at Kanras City, Missouri, and the two daughters, Mar* tha J. Lane and Anna Y. Lane, are residents of their native city.Mr. Lane contracted a second marriage on the 23d of April, 1874, at Berlin,Wisconsin, with Miss Antoinette Wright,who remained his faithful and devoted helpmeet till his death. Other near relatives of the deceased are his sister, Mrs. O. H. Denise, and his cousin, Dr. O. H. Denise, of this city. Mr. O. Schenck.of this city, is another cousin. A brother, Mr. Aaron Lane, resides at Olathe, Kansas, and another sister, Mrs. Elizabeth• aVail, at Franklin, Ohio, where numerous other relatives reside.Mr. Lane’s life was one of activity in political, religious and social fields, and he was the possessor of large knowledge upon real estate and financial affairs,having an extensive clientage in these two lines of business. He was the publisherof a map of the city, and kept a set of abstracts. He was a member of thePresbyterian church, and in politics he was a warm republican, though tolerantin his views. He was also a member of Red Cross lodge, A. O. U. W.
