Booker T. Sterling, Jr. Trial Begins In 54thBy CAMELIA FOSTERA jury was selected and testimony began in the trial of Booker T, Sterling. Jr.. 35. Monday in 54th State District Court.Sterling was arrested in both the Snowball” sting carried out on May 6, 1987 by the Waco Police Department and the “Cat Sales sting carried out on April 7, 1987.Sterling was also one of the mam state witnesses in the Joe Sidney Williams, Jr. capital murder trial just completed last week in the same courtroom.Judge George Allen is hearing the case against Sterling, who turned himscrf the day following the Snowball” sting in May. He was charged with Delivery ofHydromorphone.The “Cat Sales” sting was a reverse sting operation, where the police department operated a store at 18th and Barnard and purchased stolen property.“Snowball” was the name given to the sting by police, who were attempting to make a dent in the sale of heroin in the dty. Two outside undercover police officers were brought into town and infiltrated the drug culture in Waco to makecases.Cat” stands for “Catch A Thief’ and was the name used by WPD to catch persons who were stealing property and then selling it to pay for drugs.Sterling was one of the jail house inmates who testified for the state in the Joe Sidney Williams trial. Sterling said he had seen Williams and Washington on the night of the murder driving the car of Mrs. Juanita W'hite who was killed in her home and the residence was broken into. A juryr found Williams guilty of murder and sentenced him to life in prison.Representing Sterling is local attorney' Jim Barlow.Presenting the case for the state are special prosecutors, Crawford Long and Ralph Strother.Long and Strother were hired torepresent the city in making thecases against the people arrested in the stings and to prosecute the defendants.
