STILL RAIDED IN VENDELLHOTEL AT SPENCERA teakettle still, a gallon or so of home made liquor and a large quantity of assorted merchandise were carried off from the Vendell Hotel at Spencer as the result of a police raid Monday afternoon in search of stolengoodsA warrant was issued by Mayor E. E. Bender for the arrest of H. O. Em-rich, whose wife, runs the hotel, fcmrich was not found. D. L. Groves signed a complaint charging Emrich with breaking into the Groves Meat Market last Thursday night and steal-mg meat and other merchandise. Thir y-seven pounds of butter and a lunl eheon roll found in the Vendeli Hotel wa identified by Mr. Groves as his. There were also some slabs of bacon and of the brand he handles.The mayor issued the search warrant on information sworn to by D. L. Groves and P. L. Botts that they believed goods stolan from their stores were concealed in the Vended. The Botts store was broken into a week ago Tuesday night and thirty pounds of butter, a fresh ham and two pork loins taken. The Groves market was robbed of twenty pounds of steak, two pork loins, a luncheon roll, fifty pounds of butter, a quantity of ham and bacon and fourteen/ 'butcher, aprons. The raid was made at three o'clock. In the party were 'Sheriff Lidman. Deputy Sheriff Frank Smith, Marshals Baldwin and Win. Jones, a fctate auto license ~ sleuth and A. G. Boardman and another Milwaukee rail-road detective. Half a dozen inmates of the hotel were rounded up and the sheriff stood guard over them while others (searched the buildingand Jones with the arrest warrant looked for Emerieh.The distilling plant, an exceedingly crude affair, was found in the cellar. Four bottles and Mason jars of murky white liquid with an evil and alchoholic smell went %vith it. The ice box contained meats and butter which the marketmen claimed as their own, and in other parts of the hotel were found canned goods, a pair of overshoes, some dress goods, several boxes of tacks and other articles, had been stolen from freight cars.The mot was carted to the mayor's Office and then to the court house for Safekeeping.
