DEFEND5A write-up in' the Indianapolis News, by one Bills Searles, indicates that Judge Pulliam of the Vigo circuit court has had one “put over him by the “brewery attorneys” and others Interested in holding Terre Haute by the throat. The story led one to feel that perhaps Attorneys John O. Piety and Thomas O’Mara, selected by some Rotarians—-an organization of leading business men— would not make an honest effort to keep Terre Haute clean, as to her red light, her gambling and her politics. It is reassuring to find the Terre Haute Star and the Saturday Specta*. tor both indicating that the effort is entirely worth while and that O'Mara and Piety are to be trusted. Below is quoted a part of a long Spectator article on the subject:“And poor old Terre Haute, the goat of Indiana, is being kicked around promiscuously by the politicians crowding about the dope pot in a frantic effort to get their paddles in.“The Spectator believes the time is at hand when, instead of this dog-eat-dog game, there should be a rallying movement staged, a movement to hold up the hands of the men who are honestly trying to do something for the city, to ‘stand by the president,' as is said in these times of war.“Looking at the objective—a better Terre Haute—it really makes no difference who steps out on the firing line to do the work. It is amusing, however, to note that the people who are doing the hardest kicking on what what has been done haven’t put up a penny of their coin. It also is to be noted that the men who have shelled out their dollars to try for better things are not saying a word. The war is being carried on by the non-combatants.Cleaners Have No Political Axes“In this connection it may be well to set some of the folks straight on one point—the Rotary club as a club is not putting up any of the money ($10,000, it is said), to be paid the attorneys who.are to give their time to putting things in order in this county. This money is coming from a little crowd of men who have no political axes to grind, who do not care a continental whether the democrats are in control or the republicans., “What they are laboring to accomplish is to put the political house in such order that the things which in the past have been a menace to good government, which have kept good men from seeking public office, which have caused Terre Haute as a city to stand still, shall disappear for all time and that hereafter instead of dragging through the ooze and slime of politics with such men as Roberts and Gossom, men of character and ability to do things may be brought irtto the open as candidates and elecfcr ed to positions where their energies may be directed to the advancement of the city.“It is only because Buster Clark and Eddie Gosnell furnish the first subjects to receive attention from the new deputy prosecutors that the hue and cry is going up l!hat there is a big framettp. These two men have been operating under protection from some one; they are part of a system ! the men who are putting their money into the cleanup movement are seeking to destroy. If ftlayor Gossom's administration had not given protection to slot machine operator, Buster Clark and Eddie Gosnell would not be in the limelight as subjects for grand jury investigation now.• “Everyone in Terre Haute who knows anything at all about what has been going on knows that Gos-som’s administration has been protecting the gamblers, the prostitutes, the saloon keepers and the slot machine men. The accusation has gone out that there also, is an understanding between some of these people and the prosecuting attorney. It is to find all this out and as much more as possible that John O. Piety and! Thomas O’Mara have ■ been paid a I substantial fee to do the work.VWhile the.,finger of suspicion hasblt;|gn pointing toward the Office of Prosecutor Horsley, the friend off Buster Clark, his most severe critics | will be forced to admit that in agree-I ing. to special prosecntora he has? gone his entire length in the direc-:flem a# e fietl oviit AAmnlofn Itiveetfwo.
