Claims court recommends gunshot shooting victim receive SI 1,238CHARLESTON lt;AP - A man who suffered multiple gunshot wounds last year at a Marshall County bowling alley should receive $11,238 from the Crime Victims Compensation Fund, the state Court of Claims recommended Wednesday.The recommendation was one of 10 issued by the court Wednesday.The court recommends to the Legislature which crime victims should receive compensation from the fund, which is financed through court fees.Richard F. Cote was 39 at the time of the Sept. 26, 1985, shooting by his wife, Emma Lee Cote, at a bowling alley snack bar in Glen Dale, the court’s investigator said.Cote was wounded in the chest, thigh, left upper abdomen and right shoulder.His wife was convicted of two counts of unlawful assault and sentenced to one-to-five years in prison.The recommended award would cover Cote’s medical costs and lost wages, the report said.The court also recommended that Martin C. Jenkins, the victim of a shooting in Oak Hill on Feb. 22, 1985, receive $4,221.Jenkins was 23 at the time he was shot in the arm.The court recommended that Robert L. Smith receive $3,885 for medical expenses incurred after he was stabbed Feb. 4 while in the parking lot of a Milton, Cabell County, grocery store.The report said that Smith, then 26. confronted William P. Glover about an object thrown at Smith’s vehicle.“The offender became violent and stabbed the claimant,” the report said.Taxi driver Kenneth F. Unruesaid he got a thumping from a passenger unsatisfied with his driving, and the court recommended that the 27-year-old receive $1,172.The investigator said Unrue was driving in Dunbar on April 10 when his passenger “began to assault the claimant because he wouldn't drive faster.”The report said Unrue suffered a concussion and facial bruises. The unnamed offender was charged with battery.Other recommendations involving more than $1,000:■ $1,689 to Lidia Meade Doherty, who was 72 in 1984 when she was allegedly assaulted at the home of a friend in Dunlow, rural Wayne County.■ $2,077 to Lee W. Young Jr., who alleged he was the victim of an assault and battery Dec. 21,1985, at a tavern in Dailey, Randolph County.
