On the evening of Monday, September 1st,a notorious woman of the town named Mollie Nichols, in company with a frail companion whose name the writer doe* not know, wasARRESTED BY MARSHAL KELLYfor fa*t driving. They were calaboosed and soon, afterwards Molly was released on bail. Between the hours of twelve and one o’clock, Mrs. Nichols returned and bailed out her friend. The two at once proceeded to their house at the coiner of West Water and Ewing streets, and shortly afterwards a detachment of the police left the station bouse, where they had been eating supper, and entered upon their post midnight beats. But one of the blue coated officersLEFT HM BEAT,which was in the West End, and proceeded to Molly Nichols’ den of prostitution, where he engaged in a lengthy conserva tion upon the porch with Mollie’s good** looking but somewhat indiscreet “ boarder.” Soon after this the twain entered the house by the back door^ and it was not until half-past 3 o’clock m the morning that theamorous star-wearer emerged from the vileresort. What transpired in the meanwhile the Gazette cannot state ; it leaves that to the imagination of its readers, but it can say this much, that the house proved so attractive to the police officer that he departed from the house with many expressions ofAFFECTION FOR HIS PARAMOUR,promising to call again soon and giving her some advice as to what course to pursue at the Mayor’s court the next morn-atieitrb(h:tca!btsiUd;UsteclaisSItclraltci\t]atlbmg.The above facts came to our reporter so directly that there is no possible room to doubt their truth in every detail. The name of the offending officer is in our possession, and unless the Committee on Police take some steps to investigate the matter it shall be published. Suffice it to say, however, that the yenlleman in question isA MAN OF FAMILY ;that he has had a comparatively brief experience on the torce; that his passion for last women is only equalled by his penchant for fast horses, and that this is not the first time his indulgence in icentiou3 pleasures has got him into trouble. The Gazette thus gives the story to the public in the hope that it may arouse them to a sense of the character of some of the men to whom the guardianship of their lives and property is entrusted by .night. The Council which buyB Silsby’s engines at extravagant prices, and throwB $1500 into ditches for the benefit of private persons. is partially responsible for this state of things, and the public will so regard it. Now let the Police Committee make a thorough and complete investigation of this matter, making no attempt touIhVv81;vtIebfiVicri1c]XSCREEN THE GUILTY.Let them inquire whether or not the policeman in question was Been wiih the Water street nymph* dupave at Mad Anthony Park one week ago last Monday ; or whether he has met one or both of them several times at the French Brewery. They might also ascertain whether or not he was watchedby two policemen on the night referred to in this article, and if so why he was not arrested. Our reporter called uponCHIEF OF POLICE SINGLETON■ I in relation to this affair, but that gentle **' man was unusually reticent about imparting information. He merely said, that when a policeman was guilty of misconduct he was promptly reported to the committee on police. Whether this case has been reported we are not in a position to state, but if it has, nothing has been done to punish the policeman.Again we repeat let the committee on police, make this investigation thorough and searching, and perhaps the Gazette may then furnish them with some more candidates for the same process.
