LOOK HEREWhy Don’t the Committee on Police Look After the Oops?The “Gazette’s” Chapter from the Career of One of thePeelers.1 Policeman who Leaves His Beat to Call on Prosti tntes.% «Clear Up Ibis ThingIt is not to bo sopposed that when a man happens to get into the good graces ofa couple of councilmen from an obscureward and through his political dirty work among bummers and scalawags, secures an appointment on the police force, that his entire nature changes, and that when he dons the suit of blue he is completely transformed from a licentious whisky guzzling gambler into an upright, efficient man. Neither is it to be expected that simply because a fellow happens to have a relative in the Council, and through him becomes aGUARDIAN OF THE NIGHT,that he can be counted upon to do his duty fearlessly and uprightly. But leastof all irould it be thought that a man who ha* been known to be as corrupt politically as he is profligate morally, should he selected to act as a policeman on the jronnds either of relationship or politicalinfluence.However th^ee things should be, they ire decidedly different^* lt;an be shown by examples on our present police force, one of which we propose relating now for the benefit of our readers, The police force of our city contains several brave and fearless officers, whom the public duly appreciate; together with a number of oth ers who, while pretending to act as conservators of the peace, actually engage in drinking whisky, gambling,ASSOCIATING WITH PR03TITUTES,*nd indulging in aod winking at the very rices and crimes they are paid to suppress and punish.
