TV ELY BH.LT HEEOD DIDN'T DRAW■vyjsijuThe Estimable Board or Safety CUarsed. With Setting ITp the IJeer to Draw the Crowd Away From Mr. Herod’sMeeting*.At republican headquarters in the Talbott block, Thursday morning, the sole topic of comment was the alleged attempt of the Eleventh ward democracy to turn a republican mealing into a ^pow-wow.” Mr. Herod was down there and made a speech on the common opposite Mike Lu-cid’s saloon, at the corner of S. West and Grant-sts. The story as told at republican headquarters Thursday morning by John Griffin and Chas. Britton is substantially as follows:Mr. Eerod boarded a stock yards car at the corner of Washington and Illiuois-sts. A moment after Sterling B. Holt and K. F. Cutter yon* of the Board of public safety, and Sept. Colbert, chief of police, got oil,When they saw that Mr. Herodwas a passenger they got off at the tunnel When the next car came along, however, the three proceeded on their way and arrived on the scene of the republican meeting a few moments after Mr. Herod. Directly across Wfbt*3t. from the vacant lot is Mi.ko Lucid* a saloon. Hera bear was placed on tap and whenMr. Herod's speech was beguntho chief of police met a man named Tim Mahoney, and at nearly every assertion Mr. Herod wo aid make. Mr. Clt; lbert would midge him and tell him todeny it. Then Mahoney would Interrupt :Y r. Herod by branding bis statements as 4—’iies. When H erod had finished speaking Mahoney waiJmd u; to Herod, told himthat his speech was a lot of5 lies.’The crowd was finally coaxed across to the saloon, where freo Sullivan beer was on tap.Chief Colbert-when asked if the above statements are facts, repliod indignantly:“No, it’s a lie. I didn’t do anything of the kind. That meeting down there was a public odo, and I ana Mr. Cat-erson stood side by side and listened to Herod while be spoke, I and Mr. Catter-eon went down there together. I don’t know aDy man by the name of Mahoney. I beard some man down there interrupting Herod but I never saw him before in my life. I and Mr. Catterson were together all the time and I kept this caue right under my arm all the while. That Griffin is one of those dissatisfied democrats, I believe. He’s in the employ of the republican committee all the time. I was all over the South-side last night. I didn’t purchase any beer anddidn’t cm into Lnci 1’r saloon ”
