He was in ihe bath room, which is ptovided for the prisoners, and succeeded in picking the lock of the door opening into the corridor oi the jail, walking out unobserved by the sheriff or Ills family. O'Day was an accomplished burglar and was also a m» • chinist. He had previously told the sheriff (hat he could easily pick any lock in the jail with a piece of ordinary wire, and this statement was verified to the sheriff's astonishment on Sunday evening. No trace has been heatd of his whereabouts.Michael Slater, a farmer living in Lake township, was the victim of a brutal assault. Saturday evening. Shortly alter dark two men entered nis house and at ter ransacking everything in order to discover the hiding place of his money, toasted his feet with lighted matches to compel him to disclose the hidden treasures supposed to be located in his house. The old man was obstinate, howevec; and the robbers secured only about $3.
