'Cadaver dog' to be usedLORI STEINECK fStaff Writer ICHIPLEY — Washington County Sheriff Fred Peel believes Margaret Rich Kirkland is dead, and he has acquired a specially trained dog to search for her body today.Kirkland has been missing since Aug. 27, and her husband, Robert Beryl Kirkland, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the upper chest Tuesday night, Peel said. According to court records, the Kirklands were in the process of getting a divorce, and Kirkland was a suspect in his wife’sdisappearance.“In all likelihood she’s not living,” Peel said Thursday.Mrs. Kirkland, 34, was last seen alive at 11 p.m. Aug. 27 at her homeat 816 South Boulevard in west Chipley. Her Toyota Supra was found two days later at an 1-10 restarea near Tallahassee.The same day her car was found, her husband filed papers in the Washington County Courthouse claiming that a $5,700 certificate that had been in her name and the name of their deceased daughter actually belonged to him.Kirkland, 70, shot himself to death Tuesday night across the street from Kirkland Motor Co., which is owned by his family. He was the Republican candidate in the Washington County Commission’s District 2 race. He would have faced democrat Doyle Taylor in the Nov. 6 general election.
