Robbery Suspect Sought by PoliceBULLETINA camper truck driven by an armed robbery suspect was found by police in the 1400 block of Logan about 10 p. m. Friday, but the driver eluded law enforcement officers and at press time had not been apprehended. Discovered in the rear of the truck were three shotguns. The suspect was believed to be carrying a fourth shotgun and to have left a house on Logan on foot.A youth suspected of having held a family in the Courtney Road area hostage at gunpoint and suspected by police as possibly implicated in an Independence armed robbery was the object of an area-wide search Fridaynight.Independence police Friday afternoon had apprehended Larry Joe Ream in connection with an armed robbery at the Do Sal Shoppe, 1604 W. 23rd, which occurred at 10:15 a. m. Friday. Ream had been arrested on Courtney Road near Whitney Road.The suspected accomplice being sought by Independence police, the Sheriff’s Patrol and the State Highway Patrol in the Missouri 291 area was described as riding in a 1966 black Ford, pickup camper truck with the name “Carl Anderson” on its side, and as being 6 feet tall, medium build with short, “dirty blond” hair.He was believed to be from Kansas City andto have the first name of “Phillip” and to be 18 or 19 years old. The truck in which the youth was riding was thought to contain “at least two loaded shotguns,” police said.The family held at gunpoint in their home on Courtney Road throughout the day was apparently the “Carl Anderson family,” police said, though this was not immediately confirmed. Police described the suspect as “armed and dangerous.”Police said that Ream, who gave his address as 13803 Kentucky Road, was placed under arrest while standing near a 1972 Buick owned by Thelma Alumbaugh, an employe of Do-Sal Shoppe. The car was reported stolen following the armed robbery.Found near the Buick, police said, was a pickup truck owned by Ream, and inside the cab, a sawed-off shotgun. Three of the wheels had been removed from the Buick and were found in the bed of the truck along with a bumper jack.Mrs. Dorothy Salyer, owner of Do-Sal Shoppe, told police that a man wearing a blue trench coat and armed with a shotgun entered her shop from the rear. The man asked her to call Mrs. Alumbaugh to the rear and signaled to another man in the front of the shop The man with the shotgun then ripped the telephone from the wall, she said, tied her and Mrs. Alumbaugh up with electrical cord and left them in the rear stock room.
