They assembled to show sympathy for aiul extend moral support to Them a* H, Williams, the turfman, and Truxton I Beale, former minister to Greece, arraigned for having beaten and shot Frederick Marriott, editor of the New* Letter and the Overland Monthly. As the wounded man’s condition is so precarious that he cannot be disturbed, the hearing was continued until next Th vraday.Sir .ce the night of the shooting the accused men have, on the advice of their attorneys, refused to give any details of the attack on Marriott. It is expected they will attempt to create doubt as to which did the shooting. Marriott and his wife both declare that Williams was the man with the revolver. The press and the public are disposed to place the two men in the light of heroes, who chivalrously defended the honor of a helpless girl.* The publication in the News Letter, which led to the attack, was as follows: “I heard a very pathetic story the other day involving the sister of a pretty glri who, with her cousin, is rather prominent in society. The frl belongs to a good but not smart umlly in Sun Francisco, and she has been identified with a gay set of lt;young persons who spurn, the conventionalities. A year or so ago there was a party of these congenial spirits watching the moon rise on Alt Tamalpuis. They painted themountain in' brightest vermillion while they were there, and varying accounts of their doings crept into the papers. *“One of the dailies published a story to the effect, that all imbibed too freely, and while they were at their Jolliest they had a game of tag around the tavern clad only in their nighties. The tale was likely exaggerated, but the names of all the party were given. Afterward the prudes on the Marin side of the bay gazed askance at the pretty society girl. This so affected h6r elder sister’s health that she became an invalid and has since been in a sanitarium. It is said there Is no hope of a cure.”Although no names were mentioned, the article left no doubt as to the identity of the young woman it accused of indiscretions. She is Miss Marie Oge of San Rafael, who has borne a spotless reputation, and is one of the most popular members of the younger social circle. Several years ago her sister, Miss Gertrude Oge, became insane as a result of nervous prostration, and she is now confined in a private sanitarium.Miss Oge, who was visiting at a eoasvsea resort, did not learn of the attack upon her until her return to this city on Wednesday. Her father and brothei being absent, the girl, half crazed, went to Truxton Beale, a friend of the family, for advice. Beale quickly decided upon his course of action, and while be was arranging his plans he met Wilt Hams, who at once volunteered to assist. . - ' • ; ;V '*■ I',.: • V . ;V„Helo called upon Marriott early; intno evening and made an appointment with him fr y a later hour. With WiJllama he called at 9 p m. Marriott admitted them to the lower hallway of his house. Taking their hats and turning to hang them up, ho was assaulted and beaten about the head and face wi;h what he declares were brass kn»cklM^^;He says he heard some one say:“Give it to him good, Trux.”Marriott sought to retreat up the stalrsl t ut as he did so a pistol was fired back of him. He says he turned in time to see Williams shooting at him point blank. Stumbling, he mounted upward, three bullets crashing into him.Mrs Marriott started down stairs, thinking burglars were in the house, but was driven back, she says, by other bul.ets which tore holes in the plaster bac«r of her. kip#The police arrived and took charge of the household. Physicians were summoned, and they found that Marriott had been shot hrough the left hand and left leg. His wounds weredressed and he was taken to a hospital, where, after describing the assault and telling who his assailants were, he deha d no knowledge as his which could haveolared that he to any act ofcaused it.Williams and .......Beale left the househastily and made their way to the Pacific Union club. Here they rested for a few minutes and then sent a messageto police headquarters, saying they were ready to surrender. Detectives wentto the club for them and they drove to the hall of justice, where Judge Lawlor released them on $10,000 bonds each, with T. T. Williams and Alexander Hamiltonas securities.Beale made the following statement; “The News Letter published the most cruel, false and infamous attack upon a young woman whose family are friends of mine, and I saw the young woman shortly after the publication. She was utterly heartbroken and asked if there was not manhood enough in California to defend an innocent ginfrom such a false and slanderous at-“I talked the matter over with Thos. II. Williams, who has but slight acquaintance with the young woman, and he agreed with me that so cowardly aslander ought not to pass unnoticed. I made up my mind, and Williams agreed with me, that it was our duty to see Marriott immediately and expostulatewith him , , _ Jpp . . .“We went to his house ana saw him. We asked what justification he had for such a false libel. His answer was a sneer What followed was what any man would expect to follow. He was smashed in the face. Like a coward he did not attempt to defend himself, but went for his pistol. .Then hfe was shot. There is nothing we have to conceal, there is nothing of which we areashamed.“I do not know what may come of what we have done, and I do not cure. I would rather spend 10 years in jail feeling like a man than 10 years out of jail feeling like a cur who, knowing that such a libel of a young woman ought to be avenged, did not attempt to avengeWilliams corroborated Beale’s statement. _ mat iTruxton Beale has held two diplomaticpositions, representing this country asPlt;Gymnastic Exhibition,Bminister to Persia and as minister plenipotentiary to Greece, serving In the latter position during President Harrison’s administration.
