The safe in P. Mulder’s general store was blown into atoms with nitroglycerine about 3:30 Thursday morn- ° ing and about $25 in cash secured. The burglars were caught at their o work by J. A. Gartland and family but 11 succeeded in escaping before an alarm could be given or an officer called. ~ About 2:30 Thursday morning an j explosion was heard and commented ( upon by Night Operator Dodds and {j a number of other persons down town { who for various reasons happened to |j be awake but no one took the trouble ^ to investigate its source or meaning. ^ About 3:30 o’clock another explosion occurred which awakened the family 1of J. A. Gartland who reside above the State bank across the street from ' the Mulder store and from the window Mr. Gartland saw the burglars at work. Hastily he went out the i back way and up an alley so as not to alarm probable watchers of the I thieves to the Ideal restaurant where he was joined by P. Minmaugh and | a moment later Night Policeman De Lange was found and the trio started | in haste for the scene of the burglary* Ibut escape had been made before the spot was reached. Mrs. Gartland and son had been watching and they• I |saw a tall man and a short man leave the premises and start off northeast. Two trains were in town about to de- 1 part, one in each direction and the crowd which had gathered started for h the railway yards to cover that avenue of escape, but no suspicious characters were detected.—Rock Valley Bee. 1
